We are involved in multiple activities. Although none of our Board members take any salary and the rest are volunteers, we do have continual expenses. Presently, the most notable are commercial printing costs for public education brochures that are distributed from Islamorada down to Key West, informing tourists to be alert for deer and deer fawns when driving, and to not feed the deer, especially “people foods” which can cause rumen damage and death. We also use funds to conduct scientific research, such as the recently completed study of the availability and seasonal variability of natural drinking water sources and their effects on Key deer distribution and deer/human co-habitation. The findings are scheduled for science journal publication in 2024. We also organize regular beach clean-ups to reduce the chances of entanglement (and injury or death) by the deer in ropes and plastic, and use donated funds for the needed supplies. We purchase self-supporting road signs warning motorists to slow down, and place them alongside high-risk road areas during fawn season – and to-date have evidence these have helped avoid fawn/car deaths. We fund medical tests for the deadly Johne’s disease which must be strictly monitored to avoid wider spread through the Key deer herd.
