While waiting for the Florida Dept. of Transportation to install signage along US-1 on islands west of Big Pine Key that have important Key deer sub-herds but no signs warning motorists of a possible collision, SOKD reached out to local businesses that would be willing to have us install warning signs on their private property. Two businesses readily agreed: Low Key Fisheries on Cudjoe Key and Mangrove Mamma’s Restaurant on Sugarloaf Key. Coincidentally, a major deer translocation effort was done on those two islands by the USFWS in the mid 2000s to enhance the number of Key deer there. It is their descendants living today that our signs are trying to protect. Back
